Bayero University Kano (BUK) is located in Kano, the capital of Kano State and the second-largest city in Nigeria after Lagos. It was founded in 1975, when Bayero University College was upgraded to a fully accredited university — making it the first and oldest university in Kano State. The university houses two colleges — the College of Health Sciences and the College of Natural and Pharmaceutical Sciences — and between them span 11 faculties including agriculture, arts and Islamic studies, computing and information technology, communication, engineering, earth and environmental sciences, education, law, management sciences, social sciences, and veterinary medicine. Research is a central pillar of BUK’s mission, supported by world-class centres including the Centre for Advanced Medical Research, the Centre for Infectious Diseases, and the Africa Centre of Excellence in Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) — the latter being one of only a handful of World Bank-funded Centres of Excellence in all of West Africa.
In the July 2022 Webometrics edition, BUK held a world rank of 2,633 and was ranked 11th in Nigeria — a consistent national position the university has maintained across multiple Webometrics cycles. In the July 2023 edition, BUK improved to a world rank of 2,523, confirming a steady upward trajectory in global web visibility and open-access output. Where BUK truly distinguishes itself from its Webometrics position, however, is across other major international ranking systems that weight research quality and institutional reputation more heavily. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, BUK was placed 1,016th in the world and 5th in Nigeria, reflecting strong performance in research quality pillars. By 2025, BUK had climbed to become the 3rd best university in Nigeria in the THE World University Rankings, placed in the 1,001–1,200 global band — surpassing many older and larger federal universities in the process. In the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2023, BUK achieved a global position of 401–500, while in THE World University Rankings by Subject (Physical Sciences), BUK ranked 601–800 globally — its strongest recorded subject-specific position internationally.
BUK’s cross-ranking strength is further evidenced at the continental and composite levels. In the THE Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2023, BUK was placed 71st or above on the continent, while in the URAP World Ranking by Academic Performance 2022, it achieved 9th place in Nigeria with a global rank of 2,360. EduRank’s 2025 composite ranking places BUK 13th in Nigeria and 3,285th in the world, with the university scoring in the top 50% across 73 research topics — a breadth of disciplinary coverage that reflects BUK’s status as a genuinely comprehensive research university. Subject-level strengths include 10th in Nigeria for Medicine (1,641st globally), 14th for Computer Science (2,943rd globally), 15th for Biology (2,101st globally), and 15th for Mathematics (2,211th globally). For prospective students — particularly those in the sciences, health, and engineering disciplines — and for international researchers, BUK’s consistent top-11 national Webometrics standing, combined with its rapid rise to 3rd in Nigeria in the globally respected THE rankings, makes it one of northern Nigeria’s most important and internationally connected academic institutions.
