Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) was one of nine federal universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2011 under President Goodluck Jonathan. The university consists of two campuses — the main campus in the ancient town of Oye in Ekiti State, southwest Nigeria, and a second campus in Ikole, a local government area also within Ekiti State. There are 11 faculties within the university covering agriculture, arts, basic medical sciences, education, engineering, environmental design and management, law, management sciences, pharmacy, science, and social science. A Distance Learning Institute was also established to extend access to academic programming through partnerships with external educators and institutions.
FUOYE’s Webometrics trajectory is one of the most clearly documented improvement stories among Nigeria’s newer generation of federal universities, with official announcements marking each successive milestone. In January 2013 — just two years after its founding — FUOYE had already achieved a world rank of 10,760 and 27th place in Nigeria, placing 209th in Africa among 1,325 ranked institutions, establishing it from the outset as the best-performing university among the group of 12 newly established federal universities. By July 2014, FUOYE had dramatically improved to 7,775 in the world, 17th in Nigeria, and 153rd in Africa — its breakthrough position, and one that prompted the FUOYE community to celebrate publicly what the university described as retaining its enviable position as the best new federal university in the country. In January 2020, FUOYE achieved what was at that time its best-ever Webometrics position: 5,664 in the world, 32nd in Nigeria, and 213th in Africa — ranked #1 among the twelve newly established federal universities nationwide.
The most remarkable chapter in FUOYE’s ranking history, however, came under the administration of Vice-Chancellor Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, who took office in 2021. In the 2024 Webometrics ranking, FUOYE achieved 17th place among 170 universities in Nigeria — a leap of 15 national positions from its 2020 position of 32nd — while simultaneously being rated the 4th most sought-after university in Nigeria by JAMB for the fourth consecutive year. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings published in October 2024, FUOYE was placed at world position 1,501, and across all 108 tracked international rankings, FUOYE’s highest single recorded position is #38 globally — a remarkable peak for a university founded just 14 years ago. EduRank’s 2025 composite ranking places FUOYE 46th in Nigeria and 5,854th in the world, with 3,617 academic publications and 18,537 citations attributed to the university across 122 research topics — a breadth of scholarly output that far exceeds most universities of comparable age. Subject-level strengths cover a wide disciplinary range: FUOYE ranks 42nd in Nigeria for Engineering (3,985th globally), 46th for Environmental Science (3,820th globally), 42nd for Economics (2,914th globally), and 42nd for Physics (4,102nd globally), reflecting a genuinely cross-disciplinary research profile built remarkably quickly for a post-2011 institution. For prospective students, international research partners, and funding agencies, FUOYE’s consistent climb from 27th to 17th in Nigeria in Webometrics — paired with its arrival in the THE World University Rankings — makes it one of Nigeria’s fastest-improving and most ambitious newer federal universities heading into 2026.
